Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program

The Iowa Office of Energy Independence is seeking proposals from cities and counties across Iowa for projects that will:

  • Reduce fossil fuel emissions in a manner that is environmentally sustainable and, to the maximum extent practicable, maximize benefits for local and regional communities.
  • Reduce total energy use of the eligible entities.
  • Improve energy efficiency in the building, transportation and other appropriate sectors.
  • Create and retain jobs.

Up to $8,634,400 of funding is available for grants to be awarded under the program in six application categories.

  • Energy efficiency retrofits of existing facilities for nonprofit organizations and governmental agencies.
  • Development and implementation of energy efficiency and conservation programs for buildings and facilities within the jurisdiction of an entity.
  • Development and implementation of programs to conserve energy used in transportation.
  • Development and implementation of building codes and inspection services, compliance, training and enforcement associated with such codes in order to promote building energy efficiency.
  • Replacement of traffic signals and street lighting with energy efficient technologies.
  • Development, implementation, and installation on or in any government building of onsite renewable energy technology that generates electricity from renewable resources.

The grant application is available here additional information can be found at www.energy.iowa.gov. The deadline to submit proposals is March 5, 2010. This grant is based on the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

MLA Part Three to be held in April

MLA Part Three will discuss Tax Increment Financing (TIF) and other tools used by cities to retain and attract businesses and housing. A good portion of time will also be spent on community betterment, which will include a discussion and examples of options to improve cities, such as nuisance abatement and welcome signs. In addition, the session will cover pending legislation with time reserved to talk about the hottest topics affecting cities at the time. Census Posters Now Available

You can make your community part of this important nationwide civic event by displaying a 2010 census poster (or several) in public areas. City halls, senior centers, courthouses, employment offices, hospitals, clinics, schools, recreation centers, churches and businesses are all suitable locations for posters encouraging residents to be part of the 2010 census.

Census Day is April 1, 2010 so poster could be displayed from February through May 2010. Learn more or find your Census Bureau partnership specialist here.
