A coordinated effort between League staff and city officials, some of our most important lobbyists, accomplishes the most effective lobbying possible. Here are a few tips to assist city officials:
- Get to know the staff lobbyists. Let us know about any special connections with legislators outside of your district, or of special knowledge about any proposed legislation. Reach us by email at cv@iowaleague.org or calling 515-244-7282.
- Know the League’s positions; read our materials and take advantage of electronic communications.
- Think through how the positions relate to your community. Statistics can help! Share them with League lobbyists.
- If you have concerns about League positions, talk with staff lobbyists first. Conveying a mixed message to legislators can hurt the League’s credibility on other areas where we do agree.
- When ready to contact legislators, know if they prefer phone, email or personal contact and don’t be afraid to use several methods. Discuss what you know; offer to get information if you don't.
- Know who influences the legislator; are they willing to join you in a personal meeting? Consider inviting a League lobbyist to participate.
- Provide feedback from legislators to League lobbyists by emailing cv@iowaleague.org or by telephone.
- Join us for the League’s annual Legislative Day!
